Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Baton Rouge is a robust city with a Cajun flair. The French influence is still greatly felt in this colorful city. The city is located along the Mississippi in the southeast part of Louisiana. Guests will find the local residents friendly and outgoing. Generations of Creoles and Cajuns have created this lively city. Activities ranging from old fashioned family fun to entertaining nightlife can be enjoyed in Baton Rouge.

Food and Lodging

There are several excellent hotels in the area. Bed and breakfast style inns provide a more down home atmosphere. Camping is also available. The cuisine is what is worth the trip, though. The dining experience is not one to be forgotten. Thick gumbos and seafood stews are regulars on the Creole menus. Shrimp or crayfish cooked “etouffee” style will melt in your mouth. Hushpuppies and delicious desserts are perfect accompaniments to a spicy, flavorful meal Louisiana style.

Things to See and Do

Baton Rouge Zoo is home to over 1800 animals. There is a children’s area that has a petting zoo and hands-on area just for the younger crowd. Tour the Zoo on the Cypress Bayou Railroad. If you still need more of the wild side of life, hop on over to the African Safari Park. It is just outside of Baton Rouge. Enjoy over 75 different types of animals roaming throughout 168 acres.

The Bluebonnet Swamp Conservation Area is located near the heart of Baton Rouge. A beautiful upland forest full of magnolia and beech trees, visitors can take a self guided tour. There is a cypress-tupelo swamp and a nature center, too. There are several plantations to tour, a dollhouse museum, war museums and an art and science center. Baton Rouge also provides a unique shopping experience.

Old State Capital

One building you will not want to miss is the Old State Capital. It is a fantastic piece of architecture. The capital is a Gothic-style building over 150 years old. The capital has weathered a lot in its years – fires, weather, abandonment and worse. Tour the Old State Capital and see some of Louisiana’s most interesting history unfold.
