Charleston, South Carolina is the epitome of the Old South. Romantic architecture, magnificently restored buildings and plantation tours welcome visitors in true southern style.
Charles Towne Landing
This historic site was the birthplace of Charleston. Here is where the first permanent English settlement began. Today, it is a State Park with a history museum, a commemorative sailing ship and eighty acres of gardens and park. Charleston is full of history. From the earliest English settlers on up through the Civil War it has been a focal point for history, genteel living, and deep conflict.
Inns
There are plenty of hotels in Charleston, but to truly add to your experience travelers are advised to choose a local inn. The 1843 Battery Carriage House Inn is a popular bed and breakfast. Not only is it a magnificent work of architecture, but it has a history that is colorful. Today’s guests have the privilege of staying where William Cullen Bryant, Confederate soldiers and Southern notables have stayed. Legend has it that the ghost of a Confederate soldier roams the buildings.
Another beautiful place to stay is the Antebellum Bed & Breakfast at the Thomas Lamboll House. This home was built back in 1735. The house is located right in the heart of the historic district and offers air-conditioned rooms which represent times past.
Low Country
The food in Charleston is simply delicious. Lowcountry cuisine is similar to what one would find in New Orleans. Visitors can sample delicious jambalayas, gumbos, crab cakes and rice or bean dishes. Melt in your mouth seafood dishes are also a favorite.
The Lowcountry area of Charleston is the direct result of the African American influence brought in mostly with the slaves. These people, whether free or slaves, had a major impact on the area. Without their knowledge, talents, and hard work, Charleston would not be what it is today.
