Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is pure Deep South. Mint Juleps are still sipped on the steps of front porches. Magnolia trees and ancient oak trees with Spanish moss hanging from their branches shade the lawns of mansions and plantations.

History

Plantations, cotton and slavery are all parts of Savannah’s rich history. Savannah was the first city in Georgia. Its port made it a wealthy city during the cotton trade. But there is other history here too.

This is where Juliette Gordon Lowe, the founder of the Girl Scouts, spent much of her adult life. The Andrew Lowe house can be seen today. Guests, like General Lee, spent many hours here in the company of his friend Andrew. William Lowe inherited the estate after his father died. It included estates in England where William met Juliette. It is now open for tours.

Where to Stay

The Ballastone Inn has a history dating back to 1733. In 1883 it was purchased by a German immigrant Captain Henry Blun. He had the house enlarged to what visitors see today. The Oglethorpe residence, as it was known, remained in the family until 1910. The old buildings were purchased in 1980 and it is now a lovely bed and breakfast inn with quite a colorful history. There are 45 other historic inns and places to stay; something for all tastes and budgets.
